Hello, everyone! I hope you are having a good day. I am sure you all know about the tornado in Oklahoma that destroyed so many homes. This reminded me, as a diabetic cat who needs his insulin, that you humans have to have a plan for emergencies that includes us four legged members of your family.
The Humane Society has a guide to keeping your four legged family members safe in case of a tornado. Much of what they tell you to do can apply to places that do not have tornadoes. For example, where I live in San Diego, it is extremely unlikely that there will be a tornado. Between 1956 and 2007, there were only 27 of them reported.
However, we do have other natural disasters. For example, there were wildfires in 2007 that required the evacuation of half a million humans. Of course, they needed to take their four legged family members with them.
So that you are prepared if you need to evacuate quickly, the Humane Society recommends that you do the following things:
- Keep emergency pet supplies in a safe place
- Make sure your pets have identification with them that is up to date at all times. Microchips are the best way to make sure we do not lose our identification, especially in emergency situations.
- If you are required to evacuate, make sure you take us with you. And make sure that any emergency shelters you have are pet friendly.
- When you return to your home, make sure you take special precautions. We are used to your house being a certain way. In a disaster, it is likely it will not be that way anymore. Even when you get back to your home, do not let us out of our carriers or off our leashes because if your home is damaged, we can get lost
For a diabetic cat like me, it’s even more important to have an emergency plan. I need to get my insulin or I will get very sick. So my human knows if there is an earthquake, he needs to grab the insulin and needles in order to make sure I get my medicine if he has to evacuate.
This will make recovering from a disaster a little easier. After all, we do help you humans stay calm and reduce stress for you.
