We Almost Ran Out of Insulin This Week

March 12 Blood Sugar Readings

Hello, furiends. It is time for me to tell you about my blood sugar readings. It was a challenge this week to get enough insulin to give me my twice daily shots. You see, the prescription for my insulin expired. That meant that the white coated humans had to call to create another one. And then, it took a day for that to get filled.

In the meantime, the human had to squeeze just about every single drop out of the vial we had. He managed to do it, but I do not think he would have been able to get even one more dose for me! I am happy we were able to get a new vial of insulin when we did. Otherwise, I would have missed a dose or two.

I do not know if this affected my blood sugar readings or not. But they increased this week versus last week. They averaged 236 this week. That is higher than the 213 we saw the week before, and it is up significantly from what we were seeing last month.

Sometimes, when we get down to the bottom of the vial, the insulin there is not as good as the insulin when we have a fresh bottle. I hope this is what has happened. I do not want the human to have to increase my dosing again. This does not really bother me too much, but the human likes a lower dose because it means the insulin lasts longer.

Of course, the most important thing for the human is to keep my blood sugar levels well managed. He will increase the dose if he has to in order to accomplish this. The human does not like it when the vial gets emptied more quickly, but he will tolerate it. He does not like spending too many green paper things, but if it is necessary, he will.

I will tell you about my blood sugar readings next week. Hopefully, I will have better news for you.

Bagheera (1282 Posts)

Bagheera is a wonderful and loving cat who started off his life on the wrong foot. Literally. He is a polydactyl and since breed standard for bengals does not allow polydactylism, he was given to an animal rescue group. His human had just lost a dear feline friend, but he was fascinated by both the bengal breed and the polydactylism. So he flew up to see Bagheera, and fell in love. He took Bagheera home the same day and Bagheera didn't even let out a peep when he went on a noisy loud small airplane. Several years later, Bagheera had to endure another plane ride, but this time, it was on a big airplane. He moved with his human to San Diego. And he was all set to enjoy a life of soaking up the southern California sun but then something else got in the way. Bagheera was diagnosed with diabetes. This meant that he would have to overcome one more challenge. His diabetes is being treated with insulin and a low carb diet. He has gained back all the weight he lost and is the same active, happy, rambunctious cat that he was before his diagnosis. But he wants to help raise awareness of feline diabetes. He wants humans everywhere to realize that while diabetic cats require a little extra care and they cost more to keep healthy, they are loving and playful companions for the right humans!
