Say Hello to Saltwater Taffy

It would be easy for me to feel sorry for myself because I am a diabetic cat.  But that would be silly because there are so many cats with much more difficult challenges.  There are cats who were abused, and whose recovery is an inspirational story.  Then there are cats with diseases that require a lot more attention than a diabetic cat’s two insulin shots and blood tests per day.

Finally, there are cats who have been born with deformities.  That is what a cat I want you to meet is suffering from.Bagheera the Diabetic Cat Wants You to Meet Saltwater Taffy

Saltwater Taffy was picked up in a back yard in Philadelphia, and right away, the humans who rescued her noticed something was different about her.  Her front legs are shaped like an L.  The humans wearing the white coats think that this is because her tendons are contracted and she may be missing her radial bones.  The condition is called radial agenesis.

Saltwater Taffy is still a kitten and she’s not too strong, so she has some trouble getting around.  But, she’s able to get to her food dish, and she manages to work her way into the pile of her siblings.  And the human who is taking care of Saltwater Taffy is an amazing human.  Saltwater Taffy’s challenges are already more than what my human has to handle since I am a diabetic cat.  But her human took in her furry siblings, who also are special needs cats!

The humans in white coats cannot really tell what will happen with Saltwater Taffy.  But there are several things working in her favor.  First, she has made it this far!  Imagine what would have happened to this brave girl if she wasn’t rescued.  Next, other than her deformed front paws, she seems to be in good shape.

Finally, her human is very dedicated and determined to help Saltwater Taffy live a happy life.  Her human has created some slings to help this cute little kitten move around.  Of course, being the feisty cat she is, Saltwater Taffy doesn’t like it, and defies her human by walking around in circles.  Then her human puts her down, and she screams to be picked up and cuddled.

We have seen how many cats who have tremendous challenges have thrived despite those challenges.  Let’s hope that Saltwater Taffy is another one!
